About

Fi's seen a lot of weird stuff on the road with her family! Here are some of her favorite weird stories.
PS: These stories are fictional and were created as episodes of a paranormal TV show back at the end of the 90s. All credit belongs to their writers at Disney.

Gremlins

Gremlins are said to be mischievous little spirits that mess around pretty much exclusively with tools and machinery. Why they do this isn't clear; one story is that they helped inventors and craftsman with ideas that led to the Industrial Revolution ... and when they didn't get any credit for helping, they decided to take out their revenge on machinery ever after.

Well, if they were around back during the Industrial Revolution, they didn't actually get the name "gremlins" until World War II. Seems some British pilots and navigators were stationed out in the middle of nowhere, and started having lots of problems with everything from bad fuel gauges to faulty cables. Since they didn't want to admit that any of this could be their fault, they found a good culprit: the Gremlin! (The name is a combination of "Grimm's Fairy Tales" and an ale they all liked called "Fremlins" ... or so the rumor goes.)

Now that the War's over, gremlins supposedly infest our homes, doing the same thing to our toasters, microwaves, and computers that they did to airplanes back in the '40s. (So THAT'S why I have to reboot all the time!) Silly? Maybe. But a lot of weird stuff does go on with machines. One small example: It's 1989, and a Russian M2-11 supercomputer electrocutes chess Grand Master Nikolai Gudkov just as he's about to checkmate the machine for the third time in a row. Coincidence? Or is that the sound of giggling we hear in the background ... ?
