The word "angel" comes from the Latin derivative "angelus," which -- like a lot of words used in other cultures ("engel" in German, "aggelos" in Greek, "mal'akh" in Hebrew) -- means "messenger." All the dictionaries say stuff like: "A divine messenger and attendant spirit to a Supreme Deity, who brings guidance, comfort, and hope." Considering that nobody can really prove that angels are real, there sure are lots of rules about how the whole angel thing is set up. One belief is that there are seven divisions of angels, with an archangel in charge. These angels range from seraphim to cherubim -- you've probably seen them in lots of paintings. (They're both pictured as babies with wings, but the cherubim are always depicted with blues and golds and the seraphim with reds. Not sure why. Anybody know?) Until around the 18th century, angels were considered pretty commonplace; magicians conjured them, lots of people (supposedly) saw them, and everybody believed they interceded in the affairs of Man -- it was just sort of accepted. But then came the "Age of Enlightenment," and that was history. Or was it? After all, people used to see lights descending from the sky, and cry "Angel!" Nowadays, they see what might be those same lights, and yell "UFO!" Maybe we're just changing the labels, but still seeing the same messengers.
